Biography

Berlin-based designer Esther Bialas studied costume design in Hamburg at the FH Armgartstraße. Her regular collaborators include theatre director Nicolas Stemann (with productions in Berlin, Hamburg, Basel and Salzburg) and Wilfried Minks (with whom she co-founded the award-winning theatre collective LaborLavache). She subsequently moved into film, television, fashion, opera, music theatre, dance and operetta, working internationally with directors including Barrie Kosky, Stefan Herheim, Martin G. Berger, Sigrid Strøm Reibo, Daniel Kramer and Christian Räth, with highlights including The Magic Flute for Komische Oper Berlin (world tour). which has been touring the world ever since. For the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus movement, she was commissioned to create Nico and the Navigators (an augmented reality performance) in Dessau. Her international engagement have taken her from Bregenz to Basel, from Oslo to Lyon and from Los Angeles to New York. She was awarded a Pentiment scholarship to study fashion drawing under Professor Sabine Tschierschki.
