Stefan Herheim

Born in Oslo, he studied cello and voice and established an opera puppet company that toured throughout Norway. In 1994 he entered the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, where he studied opera directing with Götz Friedrich. Since then he has staged a large number of works, from early Baroque to contemporary repertory, at opera houses and festivals across Europe, including the Bayreuth, Salzburg, Bregenz and Glyndebourne Festivals and in Edinburgh, Berlin, Paris, London, Vienna, Amsterdam, Brussels, Oslo and Copenhagen. He was named Director of the Year by Opernwelt three times and has received international awards for his work. He lectures at several international academies and since 2022, has been Artistic Director at Theater an der Wien.
