Biography

Agathe Mélinand is a director, dramaturg and librettist in theatre and opera. Her most recent work includes a dialogue translation of Gypsy (Paris Philharmonie) and an adaptation of Offenbach’s Robinson Crusoe (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées) with her regular collaborator Laurent Pelly. Other work features adaptions of La Chauve-Souris (Opéra de Lille), Lakmé (Opéra Comique), La périchole (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées) and Offenbach’s Le voyage dans la Lune (Opéra Comique/Greek National Opera/Volksoper).  She has worked on numerous Offenbach titles including Le roi carotte, Barbe bleue, La vie parisienne, Les contes d’Hoffmann, La périchole, Orphée aux enfers and La belle Hélène.    She adapted Béatrice et Bénédict for the Glyndebourne Festival and wrote additional texts (derived from Goethe’s Faust) for Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust directed by Richard Jones. Recent theatre work includes Goldoni’s L’Impresario de Smyrne, and the French-language premiere of Harvey by Mary Chase. She also conceived, wrote and realised productions including  Monsieur le 6, Tennessee Williams – Short Stories, Histoire de Babar le Petit Elephant, Erik Satie – Mémoires d'un Amnésique and Enfance et Adolescence de Jean Santeuil (an adaptation of Marcel Proust).
